Letter from the Principal

April 15, 2021

Dear Lake Washington High School Families:

I know you have anxiously been awaiting information about the return to in-person on Monday. We have been working hard to develop all the protocols to make this a smooth transition, so we appreciate your patience.

Bell Schedule:  Attached and on the LWHS website.

Attestation: Each person entering the building must first pass attestation. The district is using Skyward for this purpose (see additional instructions at the end of this letter and in the sidebar) .

Attestation will begin at 7:45-8am. Students are not allowed in building until they have passed attestation. No students are allowed in the building prior to 7:45am.

Attestation entry points are as follows:

  1. Main Entrance
  2. 1st Floor, West Entrance
  3. 2nd Floor, East Entrance
  4. 1st Floor, Northeast Entrance

Please see attached map for details.

We are asking students to use the entrance CLOSEST to their 1st or 2nd period classes. This will reduce the students walking around the building and will allow students to get to their classes quickly.

Students need to come ready with their Skyward attestation prompt up and visible along with an identification card of some kind (Student ID, Driver’s License). Please be ready to show those at the attestation station.

If a student forgets their phone or is not able to access Skyward, they may use the Secondary Attestation Form (Spanish) at the entrance. They will simply fill out this form and then proceed through the attestation process.

There may be instances where a student is unable to pass the attestation process and is not allowed to physically come to school. It is very important if your student is not feeling well that they stay home for the safety of both students and staff of LWHS. Students will be provided an excused absence and encouraged to participate in their synchronous class remotely to continue to engage with their learning. In instances where a student will be required to remain away from campus for an extended period, the school may convene a support team to consider shifting the student to a fully remote learning model.

Lunch: Lunch is a FREE Grab and Go served at the end of the day (except for zero hour). Students are expected to leave campus with their lunch. If that is not possible, there are designated areas for students to eat in the second-floor commons and outside in the courtyards. Students must maintain the 6-foot distancing and only eat in assigned locations. Because lunch is so late, we have designated spots outside of each classroom where one student may go out, get water, eat snack during class time. Each teacher will be monitoring this.

Passing Periods: The school has been marked with directional arrows to ensure traffic flow. Please follow the 6-foot guidance and the appropriate directions. Students are not allowed to congregate in groups but must move from class to class.

Bathrooms: Only two people are allowed in a bathroom at any one time. This will be monitored, and students must wait outside socially distanced for their turn. We know this will be difficult so teachers will also be allowing bathroom use during class time.

Protocols videos: Besides the video that the district sent to be watched by all students for Monday, we will be showing school specific videos during the first days of school to ensure students who are in person are aware of the safety guidelines.

Parking: Parking is first come/first serve. The first four rows are reserved for staff parking. There is only parking in the main lot. We will not be charging for parking this year.

Open Periods:  Students with open periods will need to report to the commons at the start of the period.  From the commons, they will be assigned a room with a supervisor for that period.

Lake Washington High School Attendance:

Student attendance is based on the type of learning that the student has selected:

  • A student that has selected IN PERSON learning will be marked as follows:
    • PRESENT if the student is physically in class
    • ABSENT if the student is NOT physically in class.

We want students to be engaged in their learning, but student will be marked absent if they are not physically in class. School Messenger will notify family which will allow for communication between the school and family to inform them that their student did not physically come to school that day.

Should a student be sick or unable to pass the attestation process the student will return home and encouraged to participate in their synchronous Classroom Teams and provided an excused absence.  In instances where a student will be required to remain away from campus for an extended period, the school may convene a support team to consider shifting the student to a fully remote learning model.

  • A student that has selected FULLY REMOTE will be marked as follows:
    • PRESENT if the student attends the synchronous (live) lesson in Classroom Teams
    • ABSENT if they do not attend the synchronous lesson in Classroom Teams.

Sincerely,

Christina Thomas, Principal
Lake Washington High School
