High School Internships at Seattle City Light

Interested in exploring the business of energy production and distribution? City Light provides high school internships that allow you to get a paid, hands-on experience with the business of the utility.

Internship Details

Our high school internships are 8-week, paid summer positions. Internship opportunities are posted in early April each year.

Eligibility

You are eligible to apply for a high school internship if you:

• Are enrolled as a high school student before and after the internship (you are a continuing student)
• Have a minimum 2.00 GPA
• Are at least 16 years of age by the start of the internship
• Are a US Citizen or have a US legal work permit

We give preference to students who live in the Seattle City Light service area, but all can apply who meet the above criteria.

Support to Succeed

As an intern, you will receive support from your managers, mentors, and teammates throughout the utility. We provide an encouraging environment for learning - investing in our interns to fuel growth in individuals, our utility, and our community.

• High school student entering senior year or final term after the summer

• Available for the entire eight-week program in Seattle

Check Back Spring 2024

Being a Park & Trail Ambassador means you take your volunteering to a whole new level, committing to serving 100 hours per year at a specific site. Tasks can vary based upon your interest and include everything from educating and assisting visitors to reporting on trail conditions to monitoring restoration efforts to clearing litter on park properties. Each Ambassador can play a different role, which can be worked out with the Volunteer Program Manager.

As a Park and Trail Ambassador, we ask you to:

1. Commit 100 hours per year of your time
2. Record your hours and report on any issues you observe
3. Work with King County Parks staff to meet our goals and uphold Parks' policies and procedures

As a Park and Trail Ambassador, you will gain:

Knowledge and experience as a steward of public land

That warm and fuzzy feeling form helping to protect, restore and improve our region's finest parks, trails, and natural areas

SEATTLE CHILDREN’S RESEARCH TRAINING PROGRAM

Applications for the Summer 2024 Research Training Program open on Monday, January 8, and will close on Sunday, March 10, 11:59 p.m. Pacific time.

About the 2024 Summer Program

Seattle Children’s Research Institute is committed to building an inclusive and diverse workforce, and inspiring the next generation of scientists, physicians and healthcare workers. During the summer, our Science Education Department offers high school students the opportunity to learn more about biomedical research.

For summer 2024, we are offering an in-person programs led by PhD-level scientists and educators. Students will learn how to work in a research laboratory environment and learn about topics including biochemistry, immunotherapy, gene editing, and infectious diseases. Students will also participate in workshops on college readiness and career exploration. These programs provide students with a solid foundation for a future career in biomedical research. There is no cost to participate.

The Research Training Program (RTP) is an in-person program with a competitive application process and is intended for local students who reside within commuting distance of downtown Seattle. Stipends are available to offset costs for transportation and meals. The program does not provide or arrange housing for students.

The Research Training Program is for students from backgrounds that are historically underrepresented in the biomedical and health sciences as defined by the National Institutes of Health. Students from these groups are highly encouraged to apply:

• Blacks or African Americans
• Hispanics or Latinx
• American Indians, Alaska Natives, or Indigenous
• Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders
• Individual with disabilities, who are defined as those with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, as described in the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, as amended.
• Individuals who meet two or more of the criteria for disadvantaged backgrounds as defined by the National Institutes of Health.

We are not offering the Virtual Research Training Program in 2024.

Program Information

Format

• The 2024 Research Training Program is a fully in-person experience in a laboratory classroom. There are no hybrid or virtual options. The wearing of isolation or higher-level masks is highly recommended.

Application Timeline

• Monday, January 8, 2024: Applications for the Summer 2024 Research Training Program open.
• Sunday, March 10, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time: Applications are due. Students must submit an application form before this due date. Late applications will not be considered.
• Sunday, March 31, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time: Letters of Recommendation are due. Letter writers must submit their letters before this due date. It is highly recommended that students give their letter writers at least three weeks’ notice before this due date.
• April: Applications are reviewed.
• Early May: Applicants will be notified of their status: accepted, waitlisted, or not selected.
• Wednesday, May 22, 2024, 4–5:30 p.m.: There is a mandatory in-person Orientation Session at Seattle Children’s Research Institute in downtown Seattle. Students will submit required paperwork at this orientation.
• The Research Training Program will take place over four weeks from Monday, July 8 to Friday, August 2, 2024, from 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m. daily.

• Lectures on biochemistry, immunology, global and public health, and infectious diseases
• Labs on microscopy, agarose gel electrophoresis, immunoassays, isolating white blood cells, polymerase chain reaction, bacterial transformation, gene editing, and more.
• College and career workshops

• Group research project and presentation

Eligibility

The Research Training Program is open to current 10th grade (rising junior), 11th grade (rising senior), or 12th grade (graduating senior) high school students who have not yet applied to college.

Students must have a strong interest in one of the following fields: biology, biochemistry, microbiology, public health, or a related scientific field. Prior knowledge of these fields is not required.

Students must be able to reside within commuting distance of downtown Seattle for the duration of the program. The program does not provide or arrange housing for students. Prior formal research experience is not required. Program applicants seeking their first research experience will be prioritized over applicants who have completed other research programs and/or internships to optimize the program’s impact.

Students will receive a stipend, which is considered reportable income by the Internal Revenue Service. Therefore, students must have a SSN to participate in the RTP.

THE 2024 HARBORVIEW INSIGHT HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM 

This is an exciting and interactive four-week program designed to introduce young scholars to public health, biomedical research, & medicine.

The University of Washington’s INSIGHT High School Program has been adapted to a virtual format for 2024. Students will take a deep dive into injury and violence prevention research through various activities. The program is open to high school students entering grades 10-12 or recently graduated.

The INSIGHT High School Program offers one session option to attend. Accepted students are expected to attend the single four-week session in full.

The 2024 Internship Application is now open!

For more than 25 years TIPS has provided over 1,100 teenagers with internships in more than 230 nonprofits in the Puget Sound area and provided over 230,000 public service hours. During the program, our interns spend 6-8 weeks working with their nonprofits in a variety of service areas. They develop skills and have the chance to work on a wide array of projects with some of the most driven and inspiring nonprofit organizations in the Puget Sound area. We also provide our interns with several opportunities to work with their larger class at a job-readiness orientation, a leadership and professional development training day, a day of service, and a celebration of service.

TIPS interns help nonprofits carry out organizational initiatives by providing invaluable support to their summer programs. In turn, interns learn how to work in the nonprofit community while also building leadership skills to meet the needs of their organization. 

For many of our interns this is their first professional experience. Our internship program is designed to provide them the tools to take initiative and serve our community.

All applicants must submit a written application and a letter of recommendation for the program. Top applicants will move on to a formal interview. Based on their application and interview, TIPS will work to best match the interests and abilities of our applicants with the service areas and needs of our nonprofit partners.

CODING FOR MEDICINE FOR HIGH SCHOOL

SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM RESHAPING THE LEARNING OF BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE

In-person coding classes at the Bellevue College will continue like last year after the hiatus during the pandemic. Our online classes will also continue so that the students from around the country can join. This year, we will also offer two lab modules, namely "Learning Chemistry from Enzymes" covering chemistry concepts based on biochemical molecules and "Microbial Mysteries" teaching the techniques of biotechnology lab and using them to explore the microbial world.

This summer we will again offer the summer-long independent research program in the same manner as last year. Once again, this module will have both classes covering predetermined topics and summer-long open-ended independent research. For the research module, we plan to have a small group of students selected based on merit and genuine interest. Please contact us for more details.

PREPARE FOR STEM EDUCATION BEYOND HIGH-SCHOOL - EXPLORE THE LIVING WORLD INTEGRATING BIOLOGY WITH CODING, MATH AND CHEMISTRY!

BLAC (Building Leaders and Creators) is a paid, remote 12-week internship program, to bring more young Black people into advertising, ensuring they can fully express themselves, find community, and ultimately lead.

Built on three pillars: Education, Inspiration, and Experience, BLAC is like a 12-week version of an advertising school that not only offers paid training and job opportunities but also connects BLAC alumni with the growing, national BLAC community.

Boeing Manufacturing Internships - 2024

Build real-world manufacturing or industrial maintenance experience through training and job shadowing in a paid, on-site, hands-on Student Development Program! 

All programs include tailored training, factory tours, resume and interview skills workshops and networking with Boeing employees

About the APPLICATION FORM:

• • As you make selections on the form below, fields will appear that are relevant to the program you are interested in. 
  • You can only apply for one program - so review the information and choose your best fit, however, we do consider alternative program placement when reviewing applications
  • You will not be able to save the form and come back. We recommend that you prepare your answers, make sure your resume is ready in advance and then begin filling it out.

SELECTION TIMELINE:

For all programs except Mechatronics:

• You will learn whether you are selected for virtual interview between mid-February and early April

One full-time, paid internship is offered to a high school student who has completed their junior or senior year.  For three weeks, this student may have an opportunity to tour construction sites, attend team meetings and work in a professional environment. Over the course of the summer, a portfolio of the intern's work will be assembled and will culminate in a brief presentation on their last day. Transit expenses to get to our studio are covered.

King County Parks Youth Conservation Corps is a summer internship program that provides 10 high school-aged youth environmental learning opportunities.  This seven-week program runs from July 5 –to August 18, 2022. Interns will work with King County Parks & Recreation Division staff at multiple Parks locations to better understand the breadth and depth of environmental justice, ecological restoration, and parks and recreation management practices. The program will provide growth and learning opportunities, foster positive work relationships, and support youth in experiencing the work life environment.

Apply for the Youth Conservation Corps Internship 

Arts Corps is pleased to offer youth in 9th-12th grades this paid arts internship opportunity. Earn $300 for the engaging work of expressing your passion through art. Explore imagery as it meets performance in an exciting multimedia space located at the Seattle Symphony in Downtown Seattle with a focus on environmental justice.

The Art 4 Life @ Octave 9 offers skill building in the craft film, photography and performance. The final sharing for this program will be the kickoff event for a week of Earth Day events.

King County Wastewater Treatment Division partners with Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust to offer a paid internship experience for a cohort of high school interns to learn about local environmental issues, solutions, and careers focused on clean water in our region.
