High School Internships at Seattle City Light

Interested in exploring the business of energy production and distribution? City Light provides high school internships that allow you to get a paid, hands-on experience with the business of the utility.

Internship Details

Our high school internships are 8-week, paid summer positions. Internship opportunities are posted in early April each year.

The Summer High School Internship Program (SHIP) is a competitive, eight-week, full-time paid internship for rising 12th graders. The program is specifically designed for students from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical science. Selected interns attend an orientation day, then begin the internship with two weeks of hands-on training on laboratory safety techniques and skills in the Fred Hutch Training Labs.  For the remaining six weeks, interns are paired and immersed in mentored activities in a Fred Hutch research group in Seattle. Interns also participate in research seminars, attend professional development workshops focused on college and careers, and enjoy social activities with their teams and peers. The program culminates with intern presentations to the Fred Hutch community.

The 2023 program will run from Monday, June 26, through Friday, August 18. Students must be able to commit to the entire period to participate. We are planning on holding the 2023 program on campus in Seattle. There will not be a virtual component.  The application portal will be online here on February 1 and close at 11:59 pm on March 31. Eligibility Requirements:

High school student entering senior year or final term after the summer

Strong scientific interest and academic background

Ability to attend a Zoom interview with the selection committee

Available for the entire eight-week program in Seattle.

The UW Medicine Department of Neurological Surgery Summer Student ProgramCheck Back Spring 2024

Provides “Bench to Bedside” exposure in the field of neurosciences.

Established in 2008 by Richard G. Ellenbogen, M.D., Professor and Chair of the UW Department of Neurological Surgery, the program provides students seeking summer lab placements the opportunity to explore basic and clinical neurosciences.

Our hope is that students will be so excited by their work that they will desire to pursue an academic career in research and/or medicine.

Our mission is to recruit and educate a wide spectrum of students from diverse backgrounds, focusing on those under-represented in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), and broaden their knowledge base in the field of biomedical research, including translational, clinical and basic research; and to inspire students to pursue a career in research, medicine or allied fields, especially in Neuroscience.

Check Back Spring 2024

Being a Park & Trail Ambassador means you take your volunteering to a whole new level, committing to serving 100 hours per year at a specific site. Tasks can vary based upon your interest and include everything from educating and assisting visitors to reporting on trail conditions to monitoring restoration efforts to clearing litter on park properties. Each Ambassador can play a different role, which can be worked out with the Volunteer Program Manager.

As a Park and Trail Ambassador, we ask you to:

1.    Commit 100 hours per year of your time

2.    Record your hours and report on any issues you observe

3.    Work with King County Parks staff to meet our goals and uphold Parks' policies and procedures

As a Park and Trail Ambassador, you will gain:

Knowledge and experience as a steward of public land

The Microsoft Learn Student Ambassadors community is for students who want to use tech to solve real-world problems with like-minded peers, establish themselves as mentors and leaders in their community, and amplify their impact.  Student Ambassadors get the opportunity to connect with other students around the world (from 102 countries and counting!), foster their own online communities, get training and earn certifications, and tackle practical challenges, all while building key technical and soft skills to help them succeed.  They can also make meaningful progress on the socially significant issues that they care about.

Youth Ocean Advocates must be enrolled in grades 9–12 in a high school, Running Start or homeschool program at time of application.

We have a limited number of positions to fill each school year and summer. Potential Youth Ocean Advocates must attend one of our orientation sessions. After you attend the online orientation, you’ll receive an application to fill out and return to the Aquarium. From the applicant pool, we’ll select individuals to interview for the program. Positions are filled based upon the applicant’s interview performance and application.

Seattle Children’s Research Training Program 

Seattle Children's Research Training Program is committed to building an inclusive and diverse workforce, and inspiring the next generation of scientists, physicians, and healthcare workers. During the summer, our Science Education Department offers high school students the opportunity to learn more about biomedical research.  The Research Training Program (RTP) is an in-person program with a competitive application process for students from groups that are underrepresented in biomedical research. This program is intended for local students who live within a two-hour commute of downtown Seattle. Stipends are available to offset costs for transportation and meals. We do not provide or arrange housing for students.

The 2023 Harborview INSIGHT High School Program 

This is an exciting and interactive four-week program designed to introduce young scholars to public health, biomedical research, & medicine.

For 2023, the University of Washington’s INSIGHT High School Program has been adapted to a virtual format. Students will take a deep dive into injury and violence prevention research through various activities. The program is open to high school students entering grades 10-12 or recently graduated.

The INSIGHT High School Program offers one session option to attend. Accepted students are expected to attend the single four-week session in full.

For undergraduate, graduate and first-year medical students we offer an intensive, eight-week Summer Research Program (INSIGHT). Since 1997, Teens in Public Service (TIPS) has been striving to support community-oriented leaders by providing paid internship opportunities at non-profit organizations in the Greater Seattle area. These internships offer teens practical work experience, an understanding of ethical leadership, and a venue to put their values into action; and, our nonprofits gain additional staff during the summer months, at no cost to their organizations. Internship service areas range from youth development to medical/hospital, to environmentalism, and you may be familiar with some of our core partners, such as Atlantic Street Center, Seattle Humane Society, and Hunger Intervention Program.

The Junior Health Scholar program allows high school students between the ages of 16-18 to shadow a current Health Scholar. Alongside their college student mentor, Junior Health Scholars observe how care delivery and administrative teams work together to deliver excellent care and explore whether a career in health care is right for them. The program is offered year-round at select sites in California, Washington and Hawaii. Most individuals complete the program in nine (9) months with a commitment of one 4-hour shift per week. For those looking to complete the program faster, we offer a 3-month option where you will receive priority shift selection.

• Decide if a career in health care is right for you and which profession is the best fit
• Learn about the career path for your future profession
• Develop relationships and receive mentoring opportunities from staff and Health Scholars
• Receive a completion certification from Keck Graduate Institute, a member of The Claremont Colleges upon graduation
• Receive preferred admission into the Health Scholar program

Junior Health Scholars are given the opportunity to observe care in various clinical environments. Some of these environments may have graphic content, including but not limited to: patient nudity, graphic skin conditions, open wounds, injuries due to weapons, patients in distress, and graphic language. Junior Health Scholars will have sufficient training in how to react to situations in which graphic content is present upon beginning his or her rotations. Guardians will be asked to sign off on a graphic consent form during enrollment. Additionally, Junior Health Scholars may only attend a shift alongside a college-age Health Scholar, ensuring they receive adequate support and mentorship in a live patient care setting.

All Scholars will have access to a 24/7 pager line to contact a COPE Health Solutions team member to report any incidents, injuries or concerns that result from their experiences in the program.

Teen Arts Council

BAM's Teen Arts Council is a group program for teens, ages 14–18, who are interested in art, creativity, museums, and community engagement. The TAC advocates for teen experiences in the museum by planning teen events and curating a teen art exhibition called 20 Under 20. The TAC also has the chance to learn about how museums work behind-the-scenes, by having conversations with staff at the museum and assisting with Youth & Family Programs throughout the year.

TAC meets weekly on Wednesday afternoons from 4:30–5:30 pm, with a total time commitment of 6–10 hours per month. This is a volunteer position and counts towards high school community service hours. This program requires an application.

Community Volunteers
