LWHS Attendance Policies and Procedures

To report an absence, please do one of the following within 48 hours of the absence:
  1. Submit an absence request via Skyward. |   Click here for Instructions
    • Please include the following in your message or emails:
      • Your student’s first and last name
      • Your student’s grade
      • The reason for the absence
      • Time of Late Arrival/Time of Early Dismissal
  2. Call Lake Washington High School Attendance Hotline: 425-936-1701
Early Dismiss or Late Arrival
  1. If your student needs to leave school early due to an appointment, a parent/guardian needs to call in and report this request in advance through the attendance office.  This request can be submitted through ParentSquare, an email message, or Skyward.  We will then provide a pass to be sent out prior to the requested time for your student to come to the Attendance Office and sign-out.  This practice will help avoid an unexcused absence on your student’s attendance record and provides confirmation that your student has left the building.
    • your student returns to school, please remind them to first go to the Attendance Office to sign-in and receive a reentry pass to class.
    • Your assistance helps us ensure proper attendance records for your student.
To report an extended absence:
  • Please complete the Pre-Arranged Absence Form if your student will be missing one or more school days.
  • IN ORDER FOR THE ABSENCE TO BE CONSIDERED EXCUSED, THE FORM MUST BE SUBMITTED ONE-WEEK PRIOR TO THE FIRST DAY OF THE ABSENCE.

Parents and students, it is important that you understand that an extended absence from school places the student at a disadvantage in meeting course requirements. Our teachers will attempt to provide appropriate assignments in as much as is practical; however, in many cases it will be impossible to replicate or replace instruction that a student has missed. Teachers are not required to provide all class assignments before student leaves.

BECCA Bill:

Because regular attendance is both an expectation and a critical component of student success, parents/guardians of students with excessive excused absences in a semester will be expected to contact our School Engagement Specialist in the Counseling Office and provide documentation to verify the excessive excused absences.

As mandated by State Law, students who accumulate 7 unexcused absences in 30 days or 10 unexcused absences in a school year will be referred to the King County Juvenile Court System.

Students whom are absent for 20 consecutive days will be withdrawn for non-attendance.

Attendance Rules

  • Students who arrive to class after 20 minutes of the start of class with NO PASS will be marked ABSENT.
  • Students who leave class and are gone longer than 20 minutes and return with NO PASS will be marked ABSENT.
  • Notifications for both these circumstances will be sent out each night via ParentSquare with a phone call.

Tardies:

At Lake Washington High School, we expect students to attend all their classes on time. Arriving late can disrupt learning for everyone, so it’s important that students are in class when the bell rings. If a student arrives more than 10 minutes late, they will be marked absent for that class.

To help keep everyone on schedule, staff will mark students tardy if they are late. If a student has more than 5 tardies in a week, the following steps will be taken:

  • 5+ tardies in one week: The student will be placed on an intervention list.
  • 1 week on the intervention list per quarter: Families will be notified.
  • 2–3 weeks on the intervention list per quarter: The student will serve lunch detention for each week, and families will be notified.
  • 4 weeks on the intervention list per quarter: The student will have a one-hour detention after school, and families will be notified.
  • 5 weeks on the intervention list per quarter: A family meeting will be required, and the student may lose certain privileges as part of an attendance contract.

We appreciate your support in helping students develop good habits that will contribute to their success in school and beyond. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your student's administrator.
