Parent and Family Graduation Letter - May 13, 2019

Dear Parents and Families of the LW Class of 2019!

With less than six weeks until graduation day, we are so excited to nail down the details for the graduation ceremony. Please remember that although students may have their cap and gown all ready to go, the next few weeks will be crucial to ensuring students will be receiving a diploma on June 17th! First of all, the details:

When: 4:00pm seniors check in & line up / 5:00pm ceremony begins

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I get graduation tickets? No tickets required for LWHS Graduation 2019. Open seating – please note that disabled seating is available throughout the arena on a first come, first serve basis.

How will I know where my student is sitting during the graduation ceremony? Students will be divided to sit on both sides of the arena – they will know which side they are on based on graduation rehearsal the morning of the ceremony, taking place at LWHS after Senior Breakfast, starting at 8am on June 17th. Senior breakfast is optional and encouraged, however graduation rehearsal is required. Please plan on being at LWHS no later than 8:45am on June 17th in the GYM for rehearsal. Rehearsal will be done by 10am.

Can my graduate bring his/her belongings and phone with them to the graduation ceremony? Students are encouraged to leave all personal belongings with their families – as there is no secure place to keep purses, wallets, or expensive items at Alaska Airlines Arena. Students are welcome to keep their cell phones with them so long as they are kept OUT OF SIGHT during the entire graduation ceremony. Please do not wear Air Pods or any kind of wireless Bluetooth devices during the ceremony. Any electronics that are deemed distracting or visible will be confiscated by faculty and graduation attendants.

Where do I drop off my student when I get to the arena? All graduates will be lining up on the south side of the Alaska Airlines Arena (the pathway between the Arena and Husky Stadium-there will be signs). Families are welcome to begin seating in the arena up to one hour before the ceremony begins.

Where can I park when I get to the arena? There are several large paid parking lots around the UW area. The college will be out for the summer therefore you will not be competing with thousands of college students for parking.

Are there other ways to get to the arena beside driving? Of course! There are public transportation options such as taking the bus via Sound Transit and there is a Light Rail station within a few feet of the arena entrance. See more information at https://www.soundtransit.org/ride-with-us/stations/link-light-rail-stations/university-washington-station

Can I bring balloons, streamers, airhorns, confetti to celebrate my student? Can my student carry those things into the arena? Please, just no. The arena has a strict policy on all of these items and attendants will be checking each graduate prior to allowing them into Arena.

Can I make a poster or sign to celebrate my student? You can, however, please be aware of other families and their lines of sight. No one wants to be the family stuck behind the giant sign that you are bringing to the ceremony.

Where can I meet my graduate after the ceremony? All students will be exiting the arena on the same side of the building where they started lining up before graduation. You can coordinate a meeting spot outside of the arena – ushers will be asking families to leave the arena as soon as possible after the ceremony to prepare for Redmond High School’s graduation ceremony which opens its doors at 7pm sharp.

Where can I take pictures of my graduate after the ceremony? Although there are not many scenic spots directly around the Alaska Airlines Arena itself, the University of Washington campus is gorgeous and open to the public, right across the street. Official graduation pictures of your student receiving his/her/their diploma will be available – more detail to come on this.

What if my graduate is also in band, orchestra, or choir? Graduates who are participating with the performing arts groups will be seated in the back of the arena with their group. Please connect with Mr. Kruse, Ms. Menzenberg-Zvilna and Ms. Fuentes for more details.
